Yes, the cameras self calibrate. Mine did right after I bought it and the previous owner did a factory reset. But a manual calibration process also needs to be done if any of the cameras have been replaced, say due to an accident where body work is performed. This is why a Tesla cannot be taken to just any body shop, and there are Tesla trained people that travel from body shop to body shop who do that calibration after repairs.

But, the adaptive cruise control at least USED to measure the distance between you and a vehicle ahead using those sensors in the bumper. I know that Musk made the decision to only use cameras to perform that task, but what I do not know is if all the older Teslas were switched to that method with an update or not. It might be worth looking into whether that was the case and if not, whether you may have one or more malfunctioning sensors.

In the case of the other poster who said his truck braked for a sign, I'm thinking that was a distance sensor and not a camera since I am unaware of any other brands out there other than Tesla that are using vision only. Perhaps this is the reason Musk decided to use vision only since it can be taught to differentiate between a sign and a vehicle whereas a dumb sensor cannot.
