SW WI | I was threatened with such on a hog barn build about 25 years ago.
Got an engineer to draw up plans per county/ state regs. Handed to concrete guy who said “ oh…a little different than I was expecting”. Did not say anything about increased labor or materials. Build was June/July wrapped up…no problems in my mind.
A few days before Christmas, concrete guys calls and says…” I was going over bills and looks like we didn’t charge you what we should’ve. I was expecting X and we ended up doing Y”.
Me…” true, but I handed you those plans and you didn’t say anything about cost increase at the time, I thought the bill I paid in July, took into account what you did at that time”
It was back and forth with each of us getting a little more agitated. Finally he says he’ll just put on a builders Lein. Obviously, I wondered how that would affect my loans or borrowing ability for the near future.
I ended up paying what he wanted……sure didn’t feel good about it.
Those could indeed be more incurred costs on his part…. I still feel should have been brought to my attention as he hands me bill for completed project…..not 6 months later.
