There were thousands, or hundreds of thousands of varieties that have been lost. If the trees are still around, asking to take scionwood is your best shot, if they're not around, there might be some still locally, even if it's an abandoned homestead etc.
Taste buds change also, I remember mulberries tasting great, I think my tastes have changed, not the mulberries.
