What I was saying is if the only motive for helping your neighbor is profit is where a lot of the bitterness comes from later if things don't go the way they 'deserve' to go. I am not saying that you have to totally blot out the notion that if you help them things may come around good to you. Just don't keep a tally of your good deeds as if they all need repaid.

This is totally different than if you are in a loose business relationship with your neighbor or even father. If you are, and you are extending a great deal of capital and time to this relationship that should most definitely be repaid by future opportunity...by all means get something in writing and don't take no for an answer and if no is the answer get the heck out of that business relationship. I have seen too many people get screwed by heirs that either by greed or just ignorance don't see the value someone made for them by being there when they weren't. For your own well being, don't do something that will make you bitter later. Make sure there is a written contract for those things.

Another thing is, don't overlook things that you do for them for pay. Like custom baling or planting or anything. You may see that as a profit center for you to pay for some machinery and maybe even fully employ you in the farming sector. But, even though they are paying you, they often see it as a favor. Something is getting done and relieving some of their stress. They are appreciative that you pulled away from your farm so they get to pay you to cross something off their list and they are happy. You are also showing them you competency for the job and your skills in the financial side of it. Do a great job and they may rely on you more all the time. If it doesn't progress, you got paid and should be happy and they should be happy and you have a great neighbor hood.
