I agree, it isn't a fool-proof deal but it can and does help. One can park with the drivers door closer to the guy on the left. Back straight out, exit the car, and use the fob to advance the car to its space. If the car on the left is only carrying a driver, there is no reason for it to open the door closer to you and likewise to guy on the right will have more room for his driver's door if you have crowded the line to your left. I have also had instances where someone has parked very, very close to my drivers door and made it impossible to get in my car through the driver's door. The capability to back up and then enter the car is quite handy in those situations.
