Once you dig up and fix clay tile, it gets bad wherever you expose it. If you dig to locate old tile, check depth. You may be able to install new plastic 8–12” above old tile and leave it functional.
I have struggled with finding and leaving old tile. In the end, it would have been cheaper to abandon and start over with a decent pattern tile system.
