Good answer. The only way the cupping will hurt is if it turns off really hot and dry. As you say that is mainly due to less canopy. Other than that the cupping isn't going to hurt yield. I don't believe I am in the camp of those who think it increases yield but the downside of cupping is mainly cosmetic.
