Hardware acceleration helps improve performance by using the GPU in addition to the CPU to do various work when rendering maps and boundaries etc. It's enabled by default on all modern browsers and operating systems. Step 1 would be to check if it's disabled for some reason in your browser. In Chrome... Settings -> System -> Use graphics acceleration when available.
