You can search back more than a year, but you need to select the 'Search All Posts' option.  If you know it was in Machinery Talk, select that as well as the search will be quicker.

Allsand,

It used to work as you described. But a few years ago, something happened to the search feature which limits it to one year, even when you select "search all posts". Prior to this change, it worked just as you detailed.

Several people have speculated that the search feature was using up too much bandwidth and slowing the site down due to the huge database of old posts that it had to comb through each time someone did a search. Therefore, someone in charge may have set the 1 year limit in the search to save resources and keep the site running smoothly. This speculation was never confirmed by any moderator or site owner. Or it was limited to one year to prevent a bot attack from using the search feature to crash the site easier. Again no confirmation.

Until it is restored (if ever), we will use Google to comb through the old posts as described above. I believe that google has archived the old posts in its own cache that it can search through quickly without using any Agtalk bandwidth. Google has almost infinite resources that cost Agtalk users nothing and therefore this is the method that makes the most sense.
