I do the first method you said when I seed wheat with my JD air seeder. It logs where I have been and with auto swath it turns off when you go over an area where you have been.
I also set the headland border to the number of feet wide I make on the ends, so it turns off when I am turning on the ends with no need to hit the switch on the ends.
