Central Kansas | Older folks lose fat under the skin making capillaries closer to the thinning skin covering, thus more susceptible to rupture with a hit or hard bump. Exposure to sun (what agri-business person has not) reduces collagen in the skin’s upper layers once again setting things up for fragile small blood vessels as we rack up the years.
As mentioned, blood thinning medications, including aspirin contribute. Actually, a couple drinks/cans will increase blood flow in small vessels and can cause this effect so hitting the pool table edge might cause a bruise noted the next morning. Some vitamin deficiencies and steroid use also exacerbates small vessel rupture.
Unless you have bruising or lower leg pooling (venous stasis) without a known cause….what you are experiencing is what ever guy my age (80’s) experiences. We compare arm discoloration on Taco Tuesday nights in town. Ha | |
