25 years ago I built a retaining wall at our golf course about 4-5 ft tall using blocks with the lip that hangs over the back and locks onto the block below it.  We also used geo grid several times as we went back and I believe we also put drain tile at the bottom. The wall is still perfect.  I think they all work well if installed correctly and all will fail if done poorly.
