How do power lines deal with lightning? They must get hit much more commonly than electric fences.
Breakers and ground wires. LOTs of ground wires. Maybe not every pole, but quite a lot of poles are ground wired on the neutral and run a jumper up-close to the hot wire to catch the static. Neutral wire running parallel with the hot wire.
There probably is some big surge protectors in line too.
