Supa Dexta - 7/9/2025 08:21 What would be the thinking behind this as to where the power is dispersing? I know it doesn't like to change directions and will jump a gap - but it would have to jump towards something more inviting than continuing on the power cord. I have a diverter on the fence and a surge protector on the feed - but if I'm around during a bad storm I will even go as far as to unplug them from the wall and the power output going to the fence. My cattle don't seem to get worked up even with a storm overhead - so the fence can be off for a bit without worry.

Unplugging is good, but only a guarantee if the lightning induced surge comes through the power line unless you also unhook the fence from the charger. If you get induction from the fence, the charger is still likely destroyed if it's a high enough spike, as it's still going to travel through the charger to get to the ground rod, I wasn't thinking that part through earlier. True lightning arresters (multiple) in your fence line is the only insurance while leaving the fence operational I guess, and I am not 100% sure how well those would dissipate a really strong occurrence. Probably nothing is going to protect it from a direct strike but I'd guess those are very rare, most damage to fence chargers would be attributed to induction I'm sure.
