Subject: RE: DEF in Fuel???

NW Ohio,near Findlay
Def in new truck post. My friend put about 3 gallon of DEF in a near empty fuel tank, started it to move it out of the way. Water in fuel warning came on, and it stopped. Basically, that is all I know.
I believe the dealer had no choice other than flush everything for the warranty. Problem is no parts and no estimate when they could get them. And where do they stop on that truck. This truck was the top of the line 4 door, gotta be a 90 thousand ride. He had no choice, not going to wait months for parts. Did the dealer rip him off? I think so, but can't prove it. Did they pull tank, flush it, get in going, auction time, sell it as a demo. Or someone in the system has a cheap truck.
I really don't know what I would have done different in the case. If he wouldn't have taken it to the dealer, talked to someone that could make a judgement on what to do first. My thought would have been to drop tank, pull tank pump, flush it and reinstall. Drop filters all the way to motor, and see what happens. If it did get to the main fuel system at the motor and ruined it, then what.
I do have a question, won't the water filter stop it before it gets to the injectors and high pressure pumps? I have had water in diesel fuel in Deere tractors, changed separator filters, and go. But DEF must be way more corrosive.
