I worked two winters at a local jd dealership to keep busy and realized the only difference between me and them (other then the top tech or two) was that they weren't allowed to give up on a job. Buying service manuals and doing everything myself has been very worth it, and on the few times I have ever needed a service call I have said I'd rather wait to get the guy I name then have the first free tech
