Maybe you've already tried this but around here most river pumps the pump is mounted on the engine stand and to the clutch with a short driveshaft then you just run a suction pipe with a basket on it down into the water. You'd have to abandon your current setup and maybe that's not in the cards but it would eliminate power loss through belt slippage. Plus your belts are going to be twisted pretty severely. I've seen belt drives on gear heads so I guess it's possible but they seem to be pretty rare.

Also what are you trying to feed the water to? I guess I ask because make sure you have the right pump for what you're trying to do. If you're feeding a pivot you really should have a J style pump. The other pumps will run a lot of volume but really fall off when trying to pump pressure.
Where your pump is sitting you're going to have some pressure and volume loss because of TDH loss. If you move the pump up to the bank you will really reduce that.
