Any assessment of early US politics that does not include Tom Jefferson is lacking. TJ was a staunch Republican/Anti-Federalist and also became President.
And George Washington was a fairly tepid Federalist. There was certainly a spectrum of opinions, even back then. And the malicious name calling of today is mild mannered compared to the barbs that were spoken and published in those days.
