Federalists ----> today's Republicans.
Republicans ----> today's Democrats.
Somewhat anyway. I can certainly see the Federalist Hamilton being a Republican today and the Republican Jefferson being a Democrat today.
Third party ideas that gain traction are invariably absorbed by one of the two major parties.
