I'd switch to a centrifugal pump also. Mine uses an electric pump but I've never been all that impressed with them. I'd go with a centrifugal for serious work.
Centrifugal pumps do need to be run at or above a certain speed to develop enough centrifugal force to pump but the are forgiving and will last a long time with reasonable care.
