I remember a couple of the old IH tractors having a rod mounted to the frame rail that was supposed to be used to follow the row, turns out it was easier to watch where the front tire was between two rows. With that rod you had to lean to the side in just the right spot, watching the tire you didn't have to lean as far and was easier to give the cultivator a quick glance.
