Central Nebraska | Mine is a Hiniker 6000. The new 6500 model has some nice upgrades but at the end of the day does the same job as the 6000. If we had $5 corn I'd probably trade for one. We don't run cut off disks or shields. I have 15, 17, and 19" shares/sweeps for it but have only ran the 15" the past few years. It allows us to run a little faster. We also have an adjustable ridging "wing" in the back made by Goertzen Manufacturing/Smith Welding in St. Paul, Nebraska. It helps throw some dirt up against the bottom of the plants and covers the small weeds. Also useful/necessary if doing gravity irrigation.
As cultivators have gotten wider and we have added steerable hitches to them we have had to go to machines with shorter row units. When the steerable hitch "turns" the machine the rows on the outside of the unit move more than those in the middle and can wipe out crop of the row unit is too long. |
