Open the hood and listen for the click of the compressor when you start it. You will find the compressor doesn't engage for a few seconds after the engine starts.

You beat me too it. Anything even remotely modern turns the ac compressor clutch on after the vehicle has been running for a few seconds. Even if they didn't it does take long for the high side and low side of an ac system to equalize and take more than a little cranking to build pressure. |
