Years ago our local Coop had a soybean processing facility that used mechanical press (and maybe steam??? I am not sure how it actually worked) rather than chemical extraction like modern plants. Best I can remember the meal was a little higher in fats and the oil had a lower extraction rate. It was closed down probably twenty years ago or so because the plant was too small and could not get enough of a premium for it's meal and oil to cover the less efficient process and lower oil extraction rate. I have wondered if that would make a difference for human consumption. I have no idea.
