It's in the owners manual.

I did read in there, it just says to select the one you want, but I can’t make my side post buttons do anything, and my question still is, doesn’t the actual shaft that’s installed determine the rpm? Like don’t the two shafts engage into different splines or something that determines its speed, or do those buttons actually determine how fast the pto spins? I had my 540 shaft in for snowblower, but now when I put the 1000 shaft in for mower, it appears to be actually spinning 1000, even though the 540 button is still lit up.

Is the manual for an Auto 4/Dyna 4 tractor?

The Dyna/Auto 4 transmission has a shaft that slides into the correct gears in the PTO, which selects your gearing and PTO speed. So, there's nothing to change in the cab for PTO speed UNLESS you have economy PTO, in which case the parts book for a MT515D shows a shift lever and cable for Economy speed. It would be a shifter that reads 1550 - N - 2000

CVT tractors have a bolt on shaft, and you shift gears with the buttons in the cab you are indicating. It is most likely they use the same panel for both models, and just don't use the buttons on the Auto/Dyna 4 models...since the PTO buttons are part of the light panel.
