Follow up: and the issue was my fault. I was on the right track by replacing the pig tail on the monitor side of the 12v feed but my crimps weren't tight enough on one of the connections. Lesson learned, vice grips won't make a proper crimp. At least it was a cheap fix and I'm back in the field this morning.
