Ignition timing is a compromise - you want as much timing lead as possible for max performance, without getting into detonation (and subsequent 'dieseling' or 'running-on' like you are experiencing). I'd suggest starting at about 17 degrees BTDC at 800 rpm idle (vac advance unplugged), 36 total (vac unplugged). Might get away with more, have to test as time allows.
17 may be too much at idle if cam is on the smaller side - if the engine will idle at 500 rpm now the cam is not overly huge. | |
