for the premium price of tacomas/colorados/rangers and the like a 1/2 ton is the route i would go if your set on having a bed. If not set on a bed i would look at suvs or minivans, suv or minivan best mileage and a 1/2 ton gets same or better then a tacoma ranger colorado ETA i have heard good things about the hybrid mavericks.
