Lac qui Parle County Minnesota | Chris, I'm going through the process of an implant right now in the lower middle back (result of some very bad dentistry). I looked at the options. I just couldn't see shaving down two good molars for a bridge. Its not as cheap as a bridge. By the time I'm done it will be a little of $3000. Ouch. However, its a longer process so the costs can easily be spread out over a couple of years. I had my work done with Dr. Iverson at the Innovex Clinic in Fargo. GREAT doctor and wonderful staff. My process started last June when I had the titanium screw put in. I was equating it with the usual dental work but it was nothing like it. You go in, they put you out for awhile and when you wake up, it all over but the healing. I would say that I had less healing time compared to having a wisdom tooth out. They suture the opening and then they have you heal and develope good bone formation for about 5-6 months. A couple of days later and you forget you had it down. After the 6 month period, a healing cap is placed in the screw base. They reopen the gum and literally screw on a cap that helps get the gums ready for the next step. After another 2-4 weeks that cap is removed and place another screw that will be the base for the crown. Thats were I'm at. First part of April I'm have the healing cap removed and then they also take another casting so that the crown can be made. Two weeks after that, they install the crown.
I have to say that other the cost, I've been really happy with the results so far. Like I said, my adjoining teeth are fine and heard some things about bridges I didn't care for. Your dentist said the same thing mine did about less potential problems later in life.
