Fall spraying before frost works well. Use something with a residual to keep it knocked back better. Grazon graznext or duracor work well here
If it's not dead, it's still a good time to spray it after a light frost. Best time, as it's more vulnerable to survival over winter. I think you're spraying the little ones in the fall, no point in spraying what's already gone to seed if it's the biennial that I'm thinking. If it's a perennial still a good time to spray the big ones.
