Looks like it might be.
I know it's tougher to grow trees in NW Iowa than here in W. Illinois, but here a cottonwood would be a bad choice for a yard tree imo. Very messy, limbs fly off during storms, they can get way too big, bad drought tolerance and a fairly short lived for a tree would be a few of many reasons.
Windbreak? Heck, by the time they're 100' tall, it's likely they have no live limbs under 20', although one heck of a big trunk. Here they are almost exclusively a bottomland type tree or near a creek or other water source.
