| The ingenuity of some people is amazing. My grandfather was like that also. He also made some sort of setup to drive his first tractor from the previously horse draw implement he was pulling. I’m not sure of the exact details but your story peaked my interest to ask my mother to see what she can tell me about it. He was also a man that could fix anything and everything on his farm and make whatever he needed. As a young kid I always enjoyed learning how things worked and it was always fun to spend a week or so in the summer with him fixing a small motor. He always had one or two of those motors that needed to be taken apart, cylinder honed or something like that, and reassembled. Looking back at it now I think I was being played and I was actually “fixing” perfectly good motors. Lol
We still have his first tractor, an 8N. My mom remembers working a whole 80 acre field with it all by herself as a young child. My boys cherish old equipment like that. It’s not too practical on today’s farms anymore but I sure am proud that they like old equipment from the past instead of fancy new iron.
As I get older myself I realize that although there is a lot of new knowledge gained with every generation there is also a lot of knowledge lost with every generations passing.
