Mid-Michigan | Spent 30 years at two jobs and my wife with one. Bought a 118 acres at 22 years old and farmed it with the help of my dad's equipment after buying a 4430. Worked my jobs and helped my dad every weekend. Combined with my dad's combine and he didn't charge me for the labor I gave him (never took a salary). Bought another 120 at 30 years old. Finally all paid off. Tiled all of it. Cleaned miles of fence rows and picked up tons of stones. Have slowly bought into our operation but it was tough because I needed to buy equipment that my dad could use on his operation as well (1000 acres) but way too big for what my acreage could financially afford). My wife wasn't real happy using off farm income to buy this stuff but fortunately I could do it. Of the tools in our operation, I bought a 1760 jd planter new. A tiger mate 2 new, a cat backhoe new. A sunflower chisel plow new. A t880 used truck. My dad bought a new Mac trailer for me. I now use a 8335r that was my dad's but owned by the LLC. Also a 7720 jd that was my dad's and our combine, a 9760 jd also both owned by the LLC. I have slowly bought into our farming operation but it's taken me 40 years to do. I now farm my ground and rent my dad's from my sister's. My dad passed away may 14th of last year. My dad was very good to me but I can assure you that not much was given to me but at least I have had the opportunity. Is that enough? Do you need more info from me? I guess you are questioning my advice to nick which is fine. You do whatever you want. Getting into custom farming in my opinion (must not be yours which i can respect) but if you are telling nick to do this you don't know what you are doing, or don't have much experience or maybe both. It is a very difficult and a losing proposition unless you have a lot of capital to buy a decent line of equipment to do the job, or already have the equipment for your own operation, and then make minimum wage after wear and tear/repairs. What else would you like to know pva? I can send you my tax returns if you like? How else can I help you? And no, I dont have 3 years of side by side research to give you for anything I've mentioned above. You are welcome to visit anytime you want. Im located in owosso Michigan. Visit anytime.
Oh, I forgot. I also built a 90,000 bushel grain set up with dryer, a case ih disc. An auger. And some fuel tanks. Once in awhile some grease and oil and filters.
And by the way, if I were more polite I'd ask you how you got into farming. But, I'm not polite. I really don't care how the heck you or anyone else got into farming. I've got to worry about so many other things that sticking my nose into your business or anyone's else isn't high on my priority list.
