like other mentioned, check for the rubber pushing out and wobbling, im not sure about john deere specifically some dampers have timing marks, you can see if it has "slipped" this would indicate need to replace. They are a maintenance item as they do break down over time, its easier to just say replace it. If its never been done it probably wouldn't be a bad investment
