| So used to always drill in c. rye after soybean harvest from mid Oct. to early Nov., then strip on NH3 in late Nov. If drilling, would use about 30#/acre, and up it as it got later into the fall.
This last year had the c. rye spread with the P and K and if I would have upped the seeding rate up to 50#/acre instead of keeping it at 30 I think it would have been somewhat comparable. Also need to get the seed spread more quickly after finishing with combine.
Have been using c. rye ahead of corn for close to 20 years. No real issues, which the strips help with as they're usually pretty residue free, although in the years the rye gets waist high or so before planting, it can be tough to see the strips to try and plant on top of.
I did include a pic of a narrow strip of of corn that didn't get any N on because I left beans overwinter there for an enhancement for my CSP contract. Then when I had the pre sprayed, they didn't go in there with their sprayer because of the narrowness of the point in turning around. Usually I include 10 gal. of 32% with the pre, but the c. rye wasn't that tall this spring so left it out this year. When I post sprayed the corn, I couldn't even see the corn here as the c. rye dominated it at about 4' high. I got off the tractor and you could see the stringy little corn being dominated by the rye, but when back on tractor couldn't really see the rows so probably ran over quite a bit. It's only half an acre or so, so didn't really think about it much, but was surprised about a week ago when I was back there to see the corn now is doing ok considering. Sure, it's half the height of the other corn and off color, but I'd expect the deteriorating rye is now releasing some nutrients for the corn.
