I don't expect it to be perfected soon either.

That used to be true, and it stagnated AI development for decades. But recent breakthroughs have enabled machine learning, such as learning from the driver.
For example, my car abruptly stops self-driving whenever I pass the same spot of road where the neighbor has tracked mud and manure out onto the road with his damned feed and manure wagons. AI would see how I react to it and learn to do the same. It's not here yet, but it's coming.
