Subject: RE: Corn root depth

Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska
Absolutely. High rainfall areas need to split their nitrogen applications. We apply half our N through our pivots. I’ve only had less than 4” of rain on our Dryland corn since application in Early April. Which is a little below normal but it would be a wet year for us to have had 10” by now so leaching is not much of a concern.
A few guys apply N now but it may not get incorporated for a month by rain so I’m not sure that is a good idea.
