| Something to keep in mind is iPads are not IP rated and do not claim to be water resistant. My brother uses an iPad for NAV and lost the ability to charge after too much exposure to water on our last trip even though he had it in a ziploc bag. I haven't heard if it regained full functionality after drying out. I run a Samsung Galaxy TabActive3 which carries an IP68 rating and it regularly has water dripping off of it, or it's coated in dust, and it hasn't skipped a beat. Also note that not all tablets are GPS capable, and I believe some require a data plan for the GPS to work so make sure whatever you select has the functionality you need. I don't have a data plan on mine so loading apps and maps has to be done via WiFi. There are a number of mapping apps that do what you want and most have been mentioned already. I'll just add that if you ever get to Colorado, COTREX is hard to beat. Outside of Colorado we've used the Polaris and AllTrails apps but almost always return to Avenza. Avenza allows you to preplan a route like you want and also track where you've been. Most of the maps are free but some have a nominal charge. We've found the most useful are generally the Motorized Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) and for the Black Hills we used the MVUM maps for Hell Canyon Ranger District, Mystic Ranger District, and the Northern Hills Ranger District. BLM maps are probably the second most useful depending on the area. My recommendation would be a ruggedized tablet of some sort rather than an iPad, running the Avenza APP, and loaded with MVUM maps of the area you're riding.
