Thanks for the continued replies. I got the BPST coupler from McMaster-Carr, they were the ones that had the $40 gasket that I think might work.
I have been convinced not to use the J-B Weld and will explore some of the other suggestions. My concern is getting the threads "clean" again now that I've used Rector Seal and tape on them.
My first thought for a gasket was a camlock type gasket. This is a 3" fitting. We found a standard 2" camlock gasket was too large and the next size smaller was too small. It might be possible to trim the 2" down to make it fit. The mating surfaces would be fairly wide so the gasket would not need to be perfect although that would obviously be desirable.
