Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning. | My dad worked hard in his youth. Well before balers and even tractors, for that matter. He started working for a big cattle outfit when he was 14. They cut hay with horse drawn sickle mowers and raked it with horse drawn or pushed equipment. Stacked it with horse powered overshot stackers. There was always a crew on top of the stacks to place the hay just right, so the stack didn't tip over and have chunks slide off. Dad told many stories of workers that would drink cold water and then pass out. He drank room temp of warm water to stay hydrated. I always did the same when working in the heat. Cold water doesn't really quench your thirst. It might cool you but you are still thirsty. His advice served me well in my youth and later when I was a grunt in the tropical paradise of SE Asia. I survived some pretty rough conditions with limited water but I never passed out from the heat. |
