ecmn | Why would you use Rye? What do you need to cover crop to do? Do you have any growing season after corn harvest?
If you actually wanted a good rye stand and you had some seasoning after corn I would drill it in. We do not usually have any growing season behind corn harvest. Even still I have had good luck. Just taking a broadcast spreader and running out rye that way. That's the most economical application
The drone is going to be very unproductive at a higher rate of application. And I don't know what 10 lb per acre of Rye is going to do for you.
If we know what your goal of a cover crop is, we can probably find plants that have a very low use rate that the drone would be fantastic for.
For example, if we wanted to control some erosion, your cereal crops through the drone and some of your grasses like braum aren't going to be very good because the seeds per pound is very low. So then you could go to some of the fescues, red clover, annual ryegrass, Timothy or orchard even
But if we are trying to control erosion then you're not going to be seeding them in the fall. After harvest you're going to be seeding them very early in the season like right now. But if we have a little bit of growing season behind our corn, we can then drill in the grasses and cereal rye at a high rate. In the next spring they will green up and hold back erosion.
