It could be something simple like a ribbon cable going to the front display not connecting well anymore. It would probably be worth a try to unscrew the front cover, unhook the ribbon cable, and hook it back up again. It could also be something more complex, but sometimes it's simple stuff like this that makes electronics act up after a number of years.
