It's a very good system; otherwise, we would constantly have major swings. Without the cbot, you might load up a semi and your local delivery point decides to drop $1 while you're on your way.
"Decentralized" markets aren't as bad as people make them out to be. I sell most of my commodities via actual free market (hay) and do just fine, as do lots of other farmers in the Western US. No paper traders screwing with the prices. True supply and demand. Much better system than boards of "trade" in my opinion and experience.
And yes, hay has a global market. Our hay has went to Canada, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Japan, China, etc.
