When you are trying to cut a bearing race off of a shaft, acetylene works better than LP, and any money saved on the LP can easily disappear if you nick something you don't want to because you used propane. Also, when you use LP, you will use more oxygen, so the savings isn't as much as it seems at first.
I will jump in here, and say that acetylene is much easier for ME to cut off a bearing without nicking the shaft, if you have better luck with LP, that is possible, I am just relaying my experiences. However, I will say that on many occasions I have torched off nuts rusted to bolts with acetylene and re-used the bolts, and I don't think I could do that with LP. Could be as much to do with I learned on acetylene as anything, but that has been my experience.
I will say that if you use LP on the torch, in addition to not being as hot, LP produces its maximum heat farther away from the tip, so you will need a different 'hold' than you would use with acetylene, as well. Start at maybe double the distance from the tip to the work. | |
