s.e. Pa | We used to grow some every year, and had amish neighbors that did too but havent had any in probably 20 years. We grew it because our area is warm enough in spring that its hard to grow quality oats. It gets tall, and does make a lot of straw. The straw would be a nice light color, and was easy to sell locally for horse bedding. You had to be careful with fertilizer, it was very easy to over fertilize and have it lodge. I think that 85 bushels was a good yield at the time and pushing for more usually led to lodging. It was considered by the amish neighbors to maybe be a superior horse feed to oats, but I am not sure thats really true. It makes a kind of ugly grain with a thick husk on it. | |
