IMO it doesn't matter if it's nowhere near tassel or just before tassel. If you see spots that early its game over. We saw 60-70 bu/ac yield hit a few years ago that we didn't start seeing spots until R3. Also seeing spots before a fungicide is applied is a major concern as its likely those plants with spots will look dead in a few weeks if bad enough, even if a fungicide is applied now. I assume Purdue found those spots in the NW corner of the state? That seems the be where it starts every year. I'm a little worried this year with the cool wet start we had to the growing season.
