We picked a dump truck up very close to that town years ago. The owner was cleaning brush off a weed patch next to his house that he said wouldn't even grow grass. I'm glad he said it to start the conversation because I had already scratched around in his yard with my boot wondering how they grew anything at all. It was pure red, felt like a clay of some type, but it wasn't holding any moisture at all and the gravel layer was right under it.
