Central KS | I know what you mean. I work 30+ miles from the fire station. I respond when I am at home or on the farm, but the fire would be out before I arrived from work.
I have noticed that people show up based on the perceived urgency of the event. Everyone comes to a building fire. Pretty good turnout for a crop or vehicle fire. the same 4 or 5 of us for a grass fire.
Our county has started calling out every neighboring department even for the smallest events. I think that burns people out and they just won't come unless it's an obvious biggie. The full time emergency management gurus at the county level can't figure out that we all have things to do and are willing to help our neighbors when needed. But calling us to a fire 25 miles away and then having us stand around a few hours with nothing to do several times a week is a sure way to get people to quit responding. | |
