Had a parts man that came to us from a local NAPA. He told of the owner keeping some things like starters and alternators that he used like loaners. If customer came in needing a part but did not know enough information to get the correct part he would grab one of these loaner parts and assure them that this is the part that they needed and it would fit. Well it never fit but when they returned it they always had enough information to get the correct part. He said by doing this he assured that when they got the information they would return to his dealership but if he sent them out empty handed they could go somewhere else to get the correct part.

Thats actually a genius idea. Parts store I grew up around had a great guy behind the counter. But he would get frustrated with the customers who came in wanting spark plugs for a 350 Chevy but the engine was really a Buick of some sort thats now in a Oldsmobile. He had a set of 8 he would sell them that was his go to for those deals.
