Subject: RE: Things I've learned since becoming a parts counter man.

Had a customer one time wanting the elusive lawn mower belt only to return the belt given and ask for another several time over several days until he pulls up one day with the mower on a trailer. Went out to look a mower being sure we could solve this mystery once and fore all. Well it turned out to be a Craftsman mower painted green and yellow. Still had Craftsman decals on the hood. He still insisted it was a John Deere mower and left upset because we could not provide the part he needed.
Had a parts man that came to us from a local NAPA. He told of the owner keeping some things like starters and alternators that he used like loaners. If customer came in needing a part but did not know enough information to get the correct part he would grab one of these loaner parts and assure them that this is the part that they needed and it would fit. Well it never fit but when they returned it they always had enough information to get the correct part. He said by doing this he assured that when they got the information they would return to his dealership but if he sent them out empty handed they could go somewhere else to get the correct part.
